The Makaiwa Initiative is a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing traffic congestion and improving transportation options on Kauaʻi's East Side. Born from community conversations and rooted in local values, we're creating a better way for residents and visitors to move around our island.

The Problem We're Solving

The Wailua-Kapaʻa corridor faces serious traffic challenges. Nearly 20% of Kauaʻi visitors stay on the East Side, but almost all rent cars for their entire stay—even when they only need a vehicle for occasional day trips. This creates:

• Severe traffic congestion, especially during peak arrival and departure times
• Parking shortages at resorts, beaches, and town centers
• Strain on local infrastructure and reduced quality of life for residents
• Frustrated visitors who feel "stuck" without transportation options

Our Solution: The East Kauaʻi Mobility Hub

The Mobility Hub at Coconut Marketplace is the anchor for a smarter transportation system. Located near the airport and surrounded by resorts, it provides:

• Airport Shuttle Service - Direct, scheduled rides from Līhuʻe Airport to East Side resorts
• Kapaʻa Town Access - Regular shuttle loops connecting the Marketplace to downtown Kapaʻa
• Day-Use Rental Cars - Rent a vehicle just for the days you need it, not your entire stay
• Walking & Biking Connections - Information and access to Ke Ala Hele Makālae coastal path
• Visitor Information Center - Friendly staff to help with transportation questions and local recommendations
